Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic flowering plants. It was discovered in the Indonesia rain forest by an Indonesian guide working for Dr. Joseph Arnold in 1818, and named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the leader of the expedition.

 

Rafflesia is the world's largest flower weighing about 9kg and almost 1 meter wide. Seven out of fifteen species worldwide of Rafflesia can be found in Malaysia. You can find them at lowland forests in Malaysia, in Sabah and Sarawak, also reported from highlands areas such as Cameron Highlands.

  • R.cantleyi and R.kerrii are found in Peninsular Malaysia
  • R.arnoldii, R.pricei, R.keithii, R.tuan-mudee and R.tengku-adlinii in Sarawak and Sabah
  • R.kerrii, R.keithi, R.tuan-mudee and R.tengku-adlinii are endemic to Malaysia
