Mammillaria bombycina

Dainty cerise flowers and red, brown or yellow, hooked spines that protrude through a soft white down make this a fine plant. The cactus generally will not flower until it is at least 8 cm (3 in) in diameter. Most often globular in form, this species readily offsets to form a large showy clump.

Old lady cactus, birthday cake cactus
Cerise flowers are followed in spring by sturdy red pods that stand in a ring on the crown of this cactus, like candles on a cake. The spines are sometimes long, curly, hair-like and white. Solitary at first, the body eventually offsets or branches at the tip.
H 20 cm (8 in), S 60 cm (2 ft). Min. 5°C (41°F).

Matucana_haynei

Matucana haynei

Is a shortly columnar plant, up to 60 cm high with a dense mesh of whitish spines and prominent central, dark coloured ones. The crimson flowoers appear on the crown. The fruits are naked. All the 20 or so species of the genus Matucana come from inland valleys and plateaux of the Andes, often ascending above 2,500 m. M. haynei was discovered at 3,200 m. These situations are characterized by haevy rainfall, particularly in the southern summer (from December to April), and by a cool climate. The cacti can be found with clumps of grass and ferns, or in communities with shrubs.

Melocactus caesius

Is a spherical, bluish-green plant, reaching up to 25 cm in diameter, with reddish spines. The cephalium is composed of white wool and red bristles. This species is very abundant on the Venezuelan coast, from the Colombian border to the eastern frontier. It occurs in several forms and is also found on the nearby islands. Quite recently, related plants were discovered in inland Venezuela, along the Orinoco River. They grow at low altitudes, together with several species of the genus Pilosocereus such as P. claroviridis and P. moritzianus.

Melocactus_salvadorensis

Melocactus salvadorensis

This small species produces its cephalium when it is about seven years old. It is very variable but usually has a green hemispherical body with reddish, comb-like spines. Pink to cerise flowers appear in summer, followed by large red seed pods. The cactus grows well in sun or shade.
H 13 cm (5 in), S 18 cm (7 in). Min. 16°C (61°F).

Neoporteria wagenknechtii

Is up to 30 cm high and 11 cm wide and is found in northern Chile. As with other species, it can be grafted on Eriocereus jusbertii and E. martinii.
